Even as India and China have signalled a relaxation in ties, Beijing continues its stranglehold over exports of rare earth (RE) magnets, with applications made by Indian automakers to source the key minerals from that country continuing to hang fire. Moulding India’s semiconductor ecosystem
When Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the Vikram-32 at Semicon India last week, it signalled something foundational: the emergence of an Indian semiconductor innovation ecosystem in a world where chips are no longer just technology — they are geopolitics. Designed by ISRO and fabricated at SCL Mohali, the 32-bit microprocessor is India’s first indigenously developed chip. While it is built on 180nm technology — far from 3nm chips that are powering the global AI race — this milestone highlights India laying the groundwork for a future where chips are not just imported, but designed and built locally.

CNH chief says US tariffs on India mark ‘pause’ in trade talks
Gerrit Marx, the global chief executive of CNH Industrial, has said the 50 per cent tariffs imposed by the US on Indian products represent a pause in negotiations as both sides reassess their positions, rather than the outcome of any formal trade agreement. “The 50 per cent that are imposed on India right now is not a result of negotiations,” Marx told reporters. “It’s a kind of a pause on a discussion where both sides, I think, are currently reassessing their options. This is not even a result. So, I think we will see in a couple of months, I hope still this year, maybe then early next year, a deal between India and the US that will be materially different from 50 per cent tariffs.”
