Tata Motors EV unit registers maiden profit
For the first time since entering the space five years ago, Tata Motors’ electric vehicle division recorded a three-month operating profit in the recently concluded December quarter. This profit was independent of the fiscal incentives provided by the government under the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme during the same period. It is perhaps the first instance in India of an electric vehicle (EV) maker (excluding commercial vehicle companies) becoming profitable, and certainly the first in the electric car segment.
Brokerages bullish on Maruti Suzuki, while Tata Motors gets cautious outlook
Bengaluru: Brokerages cheered Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL), while issuing cautious calls on Tata Motors following their Q3 performances. MSIL posted a 16 per cent jump in its consolidated net profit for the December 2024 quarter at ₹3,727 crore, driven by higher sales, while the decline in revenue from its passenger and commercial vehicle divisions dragged Tata Motors’ profit by 22 per cent to ₹5,578 crore during the period under review.

The top 10 best-selling scooters – at 46,51,718 units in April-December 2024, accounted for 31 percent share of total scooter sales compared to 28 percent a year ago, selling an additional 7,93,934 units between them. And there are two popular electric scooters in the Top 10 – the TVS iQube and Bajaj Chetak.
TVS-built BMW CE 02 seeing rising demand in export markets
The export growth story of the Indian two-wheeler industry is driven by growing demand for made-in-India electric two-wheelers, particularly from TVS Motor Company. Of the total 4,45,657 scooters (up 16 percent) exported, electric scooters account for 5,633 units, which is a 1.26 percent share. Of this, TVS Motor Co., with exports of 4,959 EVs (4,063 BMW CE 02s and 896 iQubes), commands 88 percent of the exports.
Battery cell prices may have bottomed out: Tata Motors CFO
The cost of battery cells for electric vehicles (EVs) appears to have stabilised at the lower end and may soon begin to rise, according to PB Balaji, Group CFO of Tata Motors. However, the broader battery pack costs and other aggregates could continue to decline as production volumes increase, he noted.
