Iron & Steel

Stainless steel maker Mangalam Worldwide set to migrate to NSE mainboard
The company has already received approval from NSE.
Steely ambition
Recent new reports about a plan to impose 30% export duty on low-grade iron ore (<58% Fe content) effective October evoke a sense of déjà vu. In May 2022, a 50% duty was put on outward shipments of such powdery minerals, which are not fit for direct use by domestic blast-furnace (BF) plants, but the levy had to be withdrawn in less than six months. The revocation of the levy in November 2022 followed reports of large-scale job losses, a strong reaction from potential bidders for mines put up for auction, and a piling up of sub-grade fines at mining sites. The viability of mining operations was threatened, with potentially irretrievable loss of exports markets and forex earnings.
Iron ore: 50% premium cap plan raises concerns over auction process
New Delhi: India is considering overhauling the way iron ore mining rights are auctioned, proposing a cap of 50 per cent on premiums and awarding blocks based on the highest upfront payment. The plan, discussed in a September consultation meeting, was convened by one of the line ministries. An advisory committee had been formed in August to take up the issue of increasing iron ore production in India and reduce prices while steelmakers were asked to tap into the export markets.

India’s Russian oil imports robust in Sept so far, crude loadings from ports stable
New Delhi: Russian oil deliveries at Indian ports for the first half of September were robust, and slightly higher than the past couple of months, suggesting that the growing US rhetoric in July against New Delhi’s hefty oil imports from Moscow did not have any meaningful impact on Indian refiners’ crude sourcing behaviour at the time. Crude loadings at Russian ports so far in September, although slightly lower than pre-August levels, are also evidently stable even as the situation remains fluid, according to preliminary tanker data and industry insiders.

Power sector CO2 emissions down for only second time in half a century

India’s devastating monsoons have had an unexpected silver lining this year, much like the Covid-19 pandemic did in 2020. Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the country’s power sector declined for the first time in the first half (H1) of 2025 in nearly half a century — excluding the pandemic period — according to a new research. Record additions of renewable energy also helped reverse emissions growth.
