Gold, silver continue to be on fire on hardening US-EU standoff

Mumbai: Gold and silver have remained on fire for the umpteenth session, with the yellow metal rallying 4.72%, or Rs 7,205 per 10 grams, to hit a new high of Rs 1,58,270 for the February futures contract, while silver futures for March delivery surged 3.46%, or Rs 11,190 per kg, to Rs 3,34,862 on Wednesday on the MCX.

According to the All India Sarafa Association, the precious metal of 99.9 per cent purity soared by Rs 6,500, or 4.24 per cent, to Rs 1,59,700 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes).

Chennai: Gold and silver soared to new highs on Tuesday in the global and domestic markets as the current spat between the US and Europe over Greenland continued to drive investors to haven assets.  Gold topped $4,700 an ounce to a new record. It ruled at $4,732.05 an ounce at 1930 hours IST. Gold futures, expiring in February, were quoted at $4,739.75 on COMEX.  In India’s Mumbai spot market, gold ended at ₹1,47,409 per 10 gm, while on MCX, gold February contracts ruled at ₹1,50,110 for 10 gm, after rising to ₹1,52,250.  Silver topped $95 an ounce and was quoted at $95.36 an ounce. Silver March futures on COMEX ruled at $95.24. In the Mumbai spot market, the white precious metal closed at ₹3,09,345 a kg. On MCX, its March contracts topped ₹3.25 lakh a kg before ruling at ₹3,24,524.

Silver price extended its record-setting rally for the sixth straight day by rising INR3,600 to INR2,92,600 per kg in the national capital on Friday amid sustained buying by stockists, according to the All India Sarafa Association.However, gold of 99.9 per cent purity retreated from its all-time high level and declined by INR1,100 to INR1,46,200 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes) from INR1,47,300 per 10 grams in the previous session.

Chennai: Gold prices eased slightly on Friday (January 9), but remained firmly elevated, reflecting a market caught between strong safe-haven demand and short-term selling pressures. In international markets, spot gold was marginally lower during Asian trading hours as a firmer US dollar and some technical selling weighed on prices. Even so, the metal was still set for a solid weekly gain, underlining the strength of the broader upward trend that has dominated early 2025.
