Toyota has confirmed its plans of introducing a battery-powered Hilux pickup truck by the end of next year, initially in the Thailand market. The announcement comes just a few days after Isuzu revealed the D-Max EV (D-MAX BEV) at the Bangkok International Motor Show 2024, and announced that it would manufacture the electric pickup truck in Thailand by 2025.

Isuzu has unveiled its first electric vehicle concept, the D-Max EV. Toyota Kirloskar Motor has announced that despatches of the Innova Crysta MPV, Fortuner SUV and Hilux pick-up have resumed in India. The Japanese brand’s statement said that Toyota has “re-confirmed that the diesel engines meet the stipulated Indian regulations.”

It puts out 201 bhp of max power and 420 Nm of peak torque with the 6-speed manual gearbox and 500 Nm of peak torque with the 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The pick-up truck gets a four-wheel drive system as standard. The only rival that the Hilux has in the Indian market is the Isuzu V-Cross which is priced significantly lower than the Hilux.

The diesel engine is mated to a compact motor generator that is driven by a belt system, which in turn charges the new 48V lithium battery, which is small enough to be installed under the rear seats to minimise impact on cabin space, and weighs just 7.6 kg. This 48V battery also supplies the vehicle’s 12V system.
