Iron & Steel

Trust us is Tata Trusts’ message
There were apparently no fireworks. After being chided by two senior cabinet ministers a few days ago, the trustees of Tata Trusts bottled their anger, and discussed routine issues. There are other reports that the contentious issues were indeed placed on the table, but there were no outbursts, and the trustees agreed to smoke the peace pipe for now. But to think of the simmering tensions as nothing of consequence, as an Indian biographer of the Tata Group said, or to feel that they are truly buried will be incorrect. The issues involved are crucial, and specific, and need to be resolved one way or the other. One of the two warring factions needs to give in. Who is likely to blink first, especially now that the Government is a keen observer?
Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train: 10th steel bridge launched, project remains on track for December 2027
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project continued its steady progress this week — with the 10th steel bridge launched on Saturday. The Surat-Bilimora stretch is expected to become operational by December 2027. Bullet train services will reach Mumbai by 2029 as the route becomes fully available for commuters.
EU slashes steel import quota by 47% and doubles tariffs on Indian exports from 2026
Steel exports to the European Union, a market that accounted for 45 per cent of Indian exports in 2024, will come under enormous strain with the European Commission’s proposal to slash tariff-free import quota by 47 per cent and to double the duty on out-of-quota imports by 50 per cent.
ACME group eyes green steel foray
New Delhi: ACME Group will invest ₹5,000 crore to set up a 1.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) Green Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) and Green Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) facility. These products will be used in making green steel. Besides, the clean energy major has executed a binding term sheet for a long-term sale and purchase of 0.8 MTPA of green HBI and DRI on a take or pay/ supply or pay basis for 10 years with a Vietnamese firm.

Record gold prices, soaring sales: The paradox of India’s jewellery stocks
It’s not easy being a jewellery retailer – the nearly 50% surge in gold prices over the past one year to record levels of Rs 1,20,000 per 10 grams currently has made the operating environment quite difficult for jewellery chains amidst the festival season with middle class consumers thinking twice before making a purchase.

Coal / Mining

In Australian coal miners’ woes, a warning for India
India’s push to build more blast furnaces to meet its growing demand for steel raises a critical concern: It will result in increased imports of metallurgical coal. Industry leaders highlighted the risks of such import reliance at the Indian Steel Association’s Coking Coal Summit in September. India is currently dependent on imports for around 90 per cent of its metallurgical coal needs, and in the first eight months of 2025, nearly half of it came from Australia.

Renewable Energy

ENGIE secures 100 MW solar project with SECI in Rajasthan’s Barmer
New Delhi: ENGIE has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) for a 100 megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) project in Barmer, Rajasthan. This milestone strengthens ENGIE’s national renewable energy presence and reinforces its commitment to powering India’s energy transition with reliable, sustainable solutions, the company said on Friday.
DMRC invites bids for supply of 500 million units of renewable energy

At present, the DMRC meets a substantial part of its electricity requirement through green sources by sourcing around 350 MUs annually from Rewa Solar Park and generating an additional 40 MUs from rooftop solar plants installed across its stations, depots and staff colonies. With this, renewable energy accounts for about 33 per cent of the total power used during operational hours and nearly 65 per cent during daytime operations.
Powering the plough: What PM-KUSUM scheme must do to give a fillip to farmers
Progress under the PM-KUSUM scheme has remained a mixed bag. Launched in 2019, and scheduled to end in March 2026, it is aimed at adding 34,800 MW of solar capacity by that timeline, with Central financial support of ₹34,422 crore. An analysis put out last year by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) points out that the Pradhan Mantri Kissan Urja Evam Utthaan Mahabhiyaan (PM-KUSUM) scheme has only achieved about 30 per cent of its overall targets since inception.
RE development in the time of data vacuum
India’s grand ambition to build up renewable energy capacity may stub its toe on a hidden factor – lack of enough data.  There is little disagreement in the renewable energy industry on this point. You do need to know wind speeds at different heights and during different months to determine where to put up wind turbines; you do need to know how much sunshine the area you wish to put a solar plant on will receive in a year. If you say there isn’t enough of this data, you will see only nodding heads.
