New Delhi: India’s major ports saw a 5 per cent-odd y-o-y increase in cargo traffic, including container movement, to 819.3 million tonnes (mt), driven by rising iron ore exports and increasing coking coal imports. Cargo traffic in the earlier fiscal (FY23) was 784.3 mt, data by the Indian Ports Association, accessed by businessline , show.

New Delhi: Hit by non-availability of coking coal following a workers’ strike at the Adani-owned Gangavaram port, CPSE steel-maker RINL (Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd) is in talks with Paradip port for a “commodity loan” of 50,000 tonnes (of coal), while it is re-routing two coal bearing ships from Gangavaram to Vizag port.

Kochi: Cochin Port registered a three per cent growth in its cargo throughput of 36.32 million tonnes during FY24. A press statement from the port authority claimed that the achieved figure is also the highest cargo traffic recorded at the port. Out of the total cargo handled, liquid bulk cargo and containers constituted the majority . Dry bulk (3 per cent) and break bulk cargo (1 per cent) comprised the remaining portion of the cargo. The annual traffic was led by an impressive growth of 8.57 per cent in liquid bulk cargo (24.83 million tonnes), driven mainly by crude, petroleum products, and liquefied natural gas (LNG).

In a remarkable feat, the Paradip Port Authority (PPA) has become the country’s highest cargo-handling major port. Kamarajar port to become ‘Cape’ compliant
The Kamarajar port at Ennore in North Chennai will become Cape compliant - to handle large Capesize ships - by investing ₹325 crore in the dredging project this fiscal. For this, the Kamarajar Port Ltd (KPL), a subsidiary of the Chennai Port Authority (CPA), will dredge the port’s berth to 18 m draft from the present 16 m to attract such large size vessels.

Adani Ports on a high: Handles 420 MMT cargo in FY24, domestic share over 90%
Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) on Monday announced that it handled 420 MMT cargo (including international ports) in FY24, posting an increase of +24 per cent on-year. In this, domestic ports contributed to over 408 MMT cargo, it added. In a regulatory filing, APSEZ also stated that the company has handled its highest ever monthly cargo volumes (including international ports) of over 38 MMT in March 2024.

Mumbai: The Shapoorji Pallonji Group announced the sale of its brownfield Gopalpur Port to Adani Ports and SEZ Limited for an enterprise value of ₹3,350 crore. This is the second port divestment in the last few months. It had earlier divested its Dharamtar Port to JSW Infrastructure Limited for an enterprise value of ₹710 crore. “With these asset sales, the SP Group continues its deleveraging journey with planned asset monetisation to marquee counterparts,” said a press statement.

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) on Tuesday announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Gopalpur Port Limited (GPL) at an enterprise value of Rs 3,080 crore. In a regulatory filing, the company said that it has entered into an agreement to purchase the 56 per cent stake of the SP Group and 39 per cent of Orissa Stevedores Limited (OSL) in Gopalpur Port Limited (GPL).
